Callistemon viminalis is a large shrub or small tree to 20 feet with a weeping habit and light green, lanceolate leaves. This seed is of the dwarfed Littlejohn form which comes true to form from seed. Flowers are borne in profusion through summer and autumn and are bright red. Flower spikes can be as long as 6 cm. With its long flowering period, large bright red flowers and handsome weeping habit, this species is worthy of a place in almost all gardens. It prefers a light prune after flowering but will respond to heavy pruning if necessary. Like most Callistemons, it is are adaptable to a wide range of soils and climate and may be pruned severely if necessary. Many Callistemons can tolerate less than perfect drainage but usually perform best in gardens with reasonable drainage and regular availability of water and responds to well to annual fertilising after flowering and are not as sensitive as some other Australian plants to phosphorus. Propagation is easy from seed. Viminalis is less frost tolerant than some other bottlebrush species (-4*C/20*F).
