The common red strawberry is a perennial Ever-bearing strawberry. 'Ever-bearing' strawberries are very productive and produce three periods of flowers and fruit during spring, summer and autumn. They do not produce many runners and instead focus their energy on producing multiple harvests. The fruits are usually somewhat smaller than those of the 'spring-bearers' and they are excellent to eat fresh. 'Ever-bearing' strawberries are ideal for gardeners who have limited space - they can be grown in terraced beds, barrels or pyramids. They can also be used as an edging plant or a groundcover. It is an evergreen rosette-forming plant with trifoliate leaves bearing white/ cream/ pink blossoms. It is winter hardy and needs well drained, fertile soil in full sun. It will produce an abundance of berries for three to four years, after which they should be replaced. Strawberry plants can be grown in rows or mounds. The mounding method is best for ever-bearing types or in areas where drainage is a problem. In mounding, the plants are set at about 30-40cm apart. It also makes a good container plant.
